I’ve got green poop
Last month I said I was going to give The Wahls Protocol another go. This plan focuses on feeding your body down to the cell level. I’m eating foods that contain nutrients to feed my cells especially Mitochondria, the fuel of most cells in our body. And I’m eating so much green stuff that yea my poop is green. I’ve also started to eat meat and animal organs.
The meat and organ part really grossed me out. The first time I went to the butcher shop I felt sick. The thought and sight of all this raw meat surrounding me made me feel queasy.
I talked to the butcher and explained to him that I had not eaten meat for almost 20 years. And was looking for organic, grass fed, wild caught, hormone free etc. etc. He took the time to explain about his product being ethically raised and all the things I was concerned about.
So I purchased some chicken and bone broth. It was around 10:30am and I went home and I cooked up some of the chicken and it tasted really good. The next two mornings I ate chicken for breakfast plus a shake composed of some the daily required 9 cups of fruit and vegetables. On the fourth day I ate beef liver for breakfast. Not one of my favourite breakfast smells and eating it was no fun either but I ate it all. I’m going to eat liver once a week. In the second week I ate chicken hearts. Preparing them to cook was definitely the worst thing about eating them. They have a similar texture to liver but taste better.
When I was about seven years old I remember my grandmother making sheep’s brains for Sunday dinner. Back then we’d eat different parts of the animal including black pudding, (I loved black pudding). She also served beer mixed with lemonade (I was seven). The beer part is a tradition that continues to this day – ha. As I think back about my grandmothers beverage choice I’m thinking it was probably to get through eating the brains.
I quit eating meat for health not ethical reasons. I thought it was a healthier choice to go vegetarian. And at this moment I’m still thinking in that vain. But MS was part of the calculus behind that vegetarian choice. And now MS is the only reason to try eating meat again.
Eating meat was not an easy decision as I believe I’m allergic to meat. At least that’s what I think. When I was a meat eater I would puke approximately three times a week. In the middle of the night I’d wake up feeling sick, head to the bathroom and puke. I assumed this was because of a stomach ulcer I had. But when I stopped eating meat I stopped puking. And now as I have many years of vegetarian understanding; the ethical concerns of eating meat again affected this difficult decision.
So the author of this diet highly recommends eating meat and organ food. She too was a vegetarian but started to eat meat and especially organs for the essential nutrients provided. She lays out a convincing argument of being a meat and organ eater.
So I’m going to continue on this diet and validate results, if there are any, through my daily life and through my practice.
There are many other components and changes I’ve made like no sugar or sweetener, no gluten, no dairy, no grains, no legumes, and almost no alcohol – all of my favourite food groups.
If eating meat starts me puking again I’ll stop eating it but I’m hoping that the attention paid to today’s meat production is far better that it used to be. The chemicals, hormones, type of feed used. Grass fed versus whatever feed, organic versus chemicals etc. etc. I’m hoping that was the reason I was having problems with meat.
I’ve been on this food plan for about five weeks now. So far I’ve been able to manage eating meat. The organ food is gross even to touch and prepare never mind eat. But I’m giving it a go….
Be safe
